A lack of funding for prevention has prompted a rapid rise in North Carolina’s syphilis cases.

Rates have nearly doubled in the past year — a 90 percent increase from September 2008 to September 2009. There were 684 reported cases of syphilis from January 2009 to September 2009.

Rates remained steady or even declined for several years before.

Students at University of California-Berkeley barricaded a classroom building with bike chains, and other students across the University of California system were arrested as they demonstrated against a 32 percent tuition hike approved by administrators.

The protests spanned the whole system, which serves 220,000 students on 10 campuses.

University researchers now have a hand in converting their ideas into marketable products through a program that could eventually extend to the whole UNC system.

The first governor to speak at University Day was Locke Craig in 1913, and eight others have since, most recently former Gov. Mike Easley in 2001, according to records in the North Carolina Collection in Wilson Library.

“It’s real special when a sitting governor attends,” stated Daniel Gitterman, associate professor of public policy and senior health adviser to the governor, in an e-mail.
