Crime in the Northside neighborhood is common

TO THE EDITOR:

(On Dec. 2) one of my friends had over $1,000 worth of possessions stolen out of her car outside my house on McMasters Street.

Thieves have broken into my car three times this semester.

Pizza delivery chains continue to keep blacklists of streets such as North Graham and Sykes to which their drivers are forbidden from delivering because of safety issues.

Not to mention the apparent tacit consent to the existence of known drug houses on several area streets.

Unfortunately, the Chapel Hill Police Department does not make addressing these problems a priority. Instead, Chapel Hill police spend their time issuing open alcohol container citations and finding underage partyers.

My point is this: Directing resources primarily toward petty crimes does not make Chapel Hill a safer place to live. Step up to the plate, CHPD.

Do your job and stop the real crime.

While I agree with the letter writer in general, I question the wisdom of leaving a 1000 dollars worth of stuff in a car in a crime ridden neighborhood. (Continued…)

I agree that the police seem to have a mis-guided set of priorities, ESPECIALLY where it concerns alcohol enforcement (although I do think it's nice that they schedule their weekend of sting operations pretty much the same time every year). (Continued…)

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who thinks taking out neighborhoods and putting in parking garages would be a good idea.

Does the CHPD have a website that details crimes and the nature of each and every crime and where it occurs? Could such a tool assist in the identification of crime-plagued areas, which might, hmmm, need a higher-than-normal police presence or action? Last summer the town of CH hired a number of new officers in response to one single isolated event. (Continued…)

I would say a substantial percentage of the car break-ins are at the hands of the homeless and crack addicts. They come to Chapel Hill because of the bleeding hearts, and of course the bleeding hearts want to keep the homeless shelter downtown. (Continued…)

I guess you racist f@#ks are trying to say that blacks are responsible for the crimes being committed in chapel hill huh? Why reside in such a neighborhood if so? I think chapel hill/carrboro pd has done enough stereotyping and racial profiling to this date! Which i know is probably not enough for you guys, you're probably thinking just kill them all! This has always been a racist redneck town and will remain that way!

The only racial profiling/stereotyping that the CHPD does sir, is targeting STUDENTS for underage drinking or open containers. It is easy money for them, relatively safe environment (students don't carry guns or knives) and a quick buck for the city. (Continued…)

How is it racial profiling if they patrol and make stops in a high crime area? Don't want to get stopped? Don't be in a high crime area doing something illegal. (Continued…)
