Student Body President Eve Carson was shot and killed early Wednesday morning, Chapel Hill police confirmed today.
Police said they are looking for Carson's vehicle - a blue 2005 Toyota Highlander - believed to have been stolen in the incident. The license plate is AIV 6690, registered in Georgia.
There are no suspects at this time. Chapel Hill Police Lt. Kevin Gunter said that she was shot multiple times, at least once in the head, but that police believe the shooting to be a random act at this point in the investigation.
People with information are asked to call the Chapel Hill Police Department 968-2760.
"We have suffered a tragic loss today, and our community is in shocked grief," Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy said. "Eve was a beautiful, caring person who exemplified the best and the brightest."
A vigil will be held in the Pit at 7 p.m.
Carson, 22, lived about a mile from the location in which she was found.
Her body, found at the corner of Hillcrest Road and Hillcrest Circle at about 5 a.m. Wednesday, was identified by police at about 9 a.m. today in a follow-up investigation to gunshots in the East Franklin Street neighborhood reported by a Davie Circle resident Wednesday morning.
Chancellor James Moeser will give an address at 3 p.m. in Polk Place. Chapel Hill police will host another news conference at 5:30 p.m.
Students, faculty or staff who need assistance are encouraged to contact the Office of the Dean of Students (966-4042) or Counseling and Wellness Services (966-3658), Moeser wrote in a campus-wide e-mail.
Counselors also will be available at the Upendo Lounge in the Student Academic Services Building and Room 2518 A/B in the Student Union annex until 11 p.m. tonight.
