Coach was insensitive just two days after UNC loss
Issue date: 4/9/08 Section: Letters to the Editor
TO THE EDITOR:
Despite the fact that many of my classmates decided not to watch the NCAA Championship game last night, I chose to tune in. At the half, Greg Gumbel informed me that there would be a clip of Tyler (Hansbrough) accepting his Naismith Player of the Year Award, followed by a live interview with Roy Williams.
Roy's interview really upset me. Roy came on TV wearing a dark blazer, with a Kansas Jayhawk pin peaking out from under the lapel.
Instead of spending the time to talk about our team and our great season, he talked about Kansas. And how much he loved Kansas.
I don't know if Roy remembers the Final Four game on Saturday night, but Kansas killed us. We were not playing in the championship game that night because Kansas was.
I get that Roy gave 15 years to that school and has fond memories. But I do not get him going on TV two days after a devastating loss and talking about how much he loves Kansas and how great they are.
They don't have to like you Roy. You left. It is understandable; they loved you like we love you, and now you are somewhere else. Now you are at Carolina. Carolina is your home. We love you. We want you here. You are OUR coach.
I still love Roy. I am intensely proud of the season our team had. I just hope that Roy and the whole country can put behind them the fact that he left Kansas for UNC. And I hope that Roy can finally fully embrace that he is a Tar Heel, guilt-free.

I think the writer doesn't fully understand just how closely linked the two programs are. When we beat them in '93 the thrill if victory was tinged with a little sadness that Kansas had to lose. (Continued…)

"Roy's interview really upset me."
I hope you are using hyperbole here. Did you really watch that interview and get that upset? Are you the girl who was crying after the Maryland loss?

SHAME ON YOU, Roy. I guess you just packed the boys up in the bus, sent
them on their way, and stayed to watch your favorite team play.
I have lost all respect for you, as I would consider some of your
boys have, as well. (Continued…)

Does "much ado about nothing" sound familiar to any of you? because that is what all this sounds like to me. He wore a sticker. so what. He didn't go out and buy the hat and jersey and flags to wave and all that. (Continued…)

It was a bad sign when we heard "Roy and Kansas" in the same sentence with the same frequency as "Roy and Carolina." Another bad sign? When your coach is seen on national TV wearing the other team's stuff. (Continued…)
